Description:
Intermediate Seminars provide students with an opportunity to develop their careful reading, clear writing, and critical thinking skills in an interactive classroom setting; and are a graduation requirement for students who matriculate with fewer than 90 credits. In Special Topics Intermediate Seminars, instructors pilot new disciplinary themes within this established General Education format.
Pre Requisites:
Pre-req = ENGL 102, and a minimum of 30 creditsDegree Students OnlyStudents may not take more than one 200G ( Intermediate Seminar) course.

All questions should go to ana.frega@umb.edu,College and university campuses have long confronted important societal issues and have been a site of political controversy. As the U.S. has become more polarized and the landscape of higher education has had many headwinds sweep across it in the last twenty years, various kinds of challenges have become more intense. This course explores various issues that are of great importance to college campuses, including the following: (i) whether or not the college admissions process has become unduly stressful for applicants; (ii) whether or not and how colleges and universities are legally permitted to admit a diverse student body; (iii) whether or not colleges and universities should be more ’career-oriented’ in the curricula and the requirements they create; (iv) whether or not colleges and universities are giving sufficient protection to students’ and faculty members’ free-speech rights in the institutions’ quest to create safe and inclusive campus communities; (v) whether or not colleges and universities are doing enough to combat sexual assault and harassment and whether the procedures they use to address such allegations strike the proper balance between the values of campus safety and fairness for the accused; (vi) whether or not some college campuses have a problem with ’toxic masculinity’ owing to the power of fraternities; (vii) how public higher education has changed due to substantial levels of state defunding.
